Does my small business really need an AI policy?

If anyone in your company uses ChatGPT, Copilot, or any other AI tool for work — yes. Without a policy, you have no control over what data enters those systems. Client information, trade secrets, and privileged communications can all be exposed. A clear policy takes a few hours to implement and protects you indefinitely.

Is there a Canadian AI law I need to comply with?

Not a single, comprehensive one — yet. But your AI use is already regulated by PIPEDA (federal privacy), PIPA (BC privacy), human rights legislation, employment standards, and consumer protection laws. If you operate in or sell into the EU, the AI Act also applies. The regulatory environment is tightening, not loosening.

What's the risk of using AI for hiring or HR decisions?
