Building regulations
Building regulations are the legal rules that set minimum standards for the design, construction, alteration and occupancy of buildings, covering matters such as structural safety, fire protection, health, accessibility and energy efficiency. In BC they are found mainly in the BC Building Code and in local government building bylaws, which control permits and inspections.
How BC law treats it
Most of BC follows the BC Building Code made under the Building Act, SBC 2015, c 7, while the City of Vancouver has its own Vancouver Building By-law under the Vancouver Charter. Local governments administer permits, inspections and occupancy approvals.

A business renovating or fitting out premises usually needs a building permit and inspections before occupying the space.

Starting tenant improvements without permits can lead to stop work orders, costly rework and delays in occupancy.
